Thin, non-smoking office workers have all the luck!

As a larger person you'll pay more than a thinner person, as a smoker, you'll pay more than a non-smoker and if you do a dangerous job you'll pay more than an office worker. Life insurance also costs more for men because, on average, they don't live as long as women. I'm sure you get the idea.

Think of a number

Approximately 25% of the people in the UK will experience problems getting the life cover they want due to being overweight. Sadly, some are even flattly refused by the life insurance companies.

A little on the large size myself, I'm more than a little miffed that life insurance for those of us that society deems overweight is so much more expensive.

Yes, we're all told that being overweight is bad for our health, but it's also bad for our bank balances when it comes to life cover!

The cost of your life insurance will depend on several factors, such as the amount of cover you want and the length of the term. But it's also based on the probability of your insurer having to pay out.

Now double it

No, seriously, the price you could pay for your cover can be double that of your thinner friends!

You need to choose very carefully which life insurance policy you decide upon. Imagine not knowing if you've chosen the right cover and imagine not knowing if you're paying over the odds for it. As an overweight person, any mistakes can be extremely expensive.

With this in mind, you need to be certain you don't end up paying too much for your policy.

But I'm an athlete!

OK, there might be some fortunates out there whose weight will be attributed to no fat and all muscle, but most of us know if we're overweight or not. For those that don't, the powers that be have invented a natty little index to free us from our denial.

Weight and height and are just two questions you answer when you apply for life insurance and insurers use this information to calculate your Body Mass Index (BMI).

If your BMI exceeds life insurance companies' acceptable limits, you can expect your premium to rise - if it exceeds their limits dramatically, then expect your premiums to rise dramatically.

Adult BMI is determined by multiplying your height in metres and then multiplied by the same figure. Then divide that figure by your weight in kilograms.

The resulting figure aren't always a pinpoint indication and the medical establishment do generally acknowledge some shortcomings. For example, fatness is sometimes overestimated in muscular or athletic people. That said, insurance companies find it's a useful tool to estimate a healthy body weight based on how tall a person is.

Help is at hand

The good news is that you can now relax and stop wasting any more time searching the net for cheaper life policies - all the hard work is done for you.

More 'good' news is that if you have any existing health problems, you shouldn't necessarily assume that you're uninsurable. Advances in the treatment of diseases such as diabetes and cancer have led insurers to lower premiums for people once considered a much higher risk.

Fully FSA qualified advisors are waiting in the wings to help. They'll search the whole of the UK life insurance market and identify an appropriate range of products that suit both your weight and your circumstances. Advisers deal with a huge range of insurers, so whatever your weight, age, job, circumstances or gender, they'll aim to provide a policy tailored especially to suit your needs.

Save money

You can compare the whole market for life insurance prices. Even those of you that already have a life insurance policy could benefit from lower prices by switching your cover to a different, cheaper provider. This can be especially true for those who are 'penalised' because they are overweight.

That said, you'll also need to compare what's covered by a life policy and not just look at the price. Some cheaper insurances may not offer the same level of protection. However, you shouldn't have to settle for second best just because some insurers inflate their prices.
